Where do you start a journey – at the beginning?
Sometimes it better to move closer to the end in order to begin. In the case of Joe Fagan, he was closer to the end than he cared to be.
He knew he was dying.
Raindrops spattered against his face. A last lingering touch of reality. The end was close. In that moment before you died, did your whole life flash in front of you? Or did you only reflect on the events that had brought you to this point?
He thought about the man inside the house, about his own part in bringing him to be there, and how far the man had risen since that first time they met. It was no surprise. It was clear he was an extraordinary man.
Back then they were both very different people, set on different paths. Despite the circumstances they had found themselves in, the man had never doubted they would extricate themselves from their precarious situation. And he was right. The future back then had seemed so different, so bright, so hopeful.
It was strange how far one man could rise, and how far another could fall.
